Coach Taken To VOA While Awaiting Trial

On Behalf of | Jun 24, 2016 | Sex Crimes |

A former Park Tudor basketball coach who allegedly had an inappropriate relationship with a female student will be held at Brandon Hall while his case proceeds. The facility where the man is staying contracts with the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Indiana Department of Corrections and Marion County Community Corrections. It also provides housing for veterans and senior citizens. A judge initially ruled on Feb. 8 that the man would be released while he awaits trial.

However, prosecutors asked the judge to reconsider citing alleged interference in the case. Authorities say that he messaged students and asked the victim to lie to cover up his alleged activity. The former coach will be bound by 14 conditions while he is there. He may not receive phone calls, must comply with a lawful request for a DNA sample and may not use alcohol or drugs unless prescribed by a medical professional.

Furthermore, he is required to stay at the facility 24 hours a day, except for court appearances and other approved reasons and while accompanied by someone from the VOA. School officials were initially made aware of the case when the girl’s father found text messages and other communications between the two. An investigation began in January 2015 with the coach being taken into custody on Feb. 4.

Those who have been taken into custody on a sexual assault charge may face many consequences. If convicted, it may be possible to spend time in prison or on probation. It may also be necessary to register as a sex offender depending on the nature of the crime. However, an attorney may be able to create a defense to that charge. Possible defenses include casting doubt on witness testimony or the nature of the relationship between the defendant and the alleged victim.
