A 47-year-old Indiana elementary school teacher is facing drug charges after she was taken into custody at the school where she works. Police had previously searched her home in response to tips but found nothing. At the school, they found a container in her purse that contained methamphetamine.
Prior to going to the woman’s workplace, on the same day, police had gone to her house once more, and this time they found marijuana, hydrocodone, Oxycontin and opana. Police detained the woman’s 42-year-old boyfriend as well as her daughter’s 31-year-old boyfriend. The teacher’s boyfriend had an ankle monitor that allegedly indicated he had been at locations police described as places he should not have been.
The woman had been working for more than 10 years in the district. Police waited until after students had gone home to act. She has been placed on administrative leave and has been with charged with possession along with the other two.
With drug possession charges, there might be serious consequences for a person’s career. For example, people who work in professions such as education, medicine or politics may be particularly vulnerable. This is one of the considerations that the person might want to discuss with a criminal defense attorney. For a person whose career might be ruined by even minor charges, the main focus might be on getting the charges dismissed altogether. This might be done by looking at how evidence was gathered and how the person was taken into custody. Police may have made an error at some point that requires evidence to be ruled inadmissible.
